Coldworking is the term used to describe the processes involved in finishing your glass once the hot processes (from the furnace or kiln) are over.

This is a fully comprehensive course where you’ll be introduced to everything you’ll need to finish glass. All tools and equipment will be fully demonstrated and explained before you will be let loose to work on your own pieces bringing them to their best potential. You’ll also be advised on what you’ll need to coldwork your own pieces effectively and what you might need to buy for your own studio.

Knowing how to coldwork properly is essential – it’ll transform your work to reveal the true
properties and beauty of the glass.

The studio is really well equipped and you’ll use:
Sandblaster – for cleaning, decorative masking techniques and surface decoration of glass
Flatbed grinder – for removing glass, flatting surfaces and the shaping of forms
Linisher – for sanding and polishing
Rociprolap – for polishing flat surfaces
Diamond tools – files and pads for small scale work, bevels, edging etc
Flexi drive – for engraving and adding fine detail
Airtool – for cutting, grinding and polishing flat and curved surfaces
Lathe – for adding decorative cuts and patterns and polishing specific areas

Students will be expected to bring their own glass pieces to work on, which they may have cast, blown, fused or slumped, and a small group size of 4 students will ensure that they’ll receive loads of personal attention and no queuing to use equipment.

+ Q1 | What are the aims for the course and what will it cover?

This is an opportunity to be taught how to do things the right way – proper, safe and effective methods of using equipment to get the best out of your work. The course will teach you skills for life and methods of working that mean you will be able to coldwork with minimal mistakes and less time wasted to achieve gallery quality results.

Please note that no glass work will be made on the course - it’s aimed purely at finishing pieces that you already have and can bring with you.

+ Q2 | Is this class for me?

Yes if you want to learn how to finish glass well. No previous experience is necessary as you’ll be taught as much as you can absorb. If you have got some experience that’s great – I promise I’ll add to your knowledge and repertoire.

+ Q3 | How many pieces will I get finished?

It’s impossible to say exactly – grinding bases and sandblasting clean is the most basic and fastest way of finishing. Polishing surfaces takes a lot longer and requires many stages of grit change, so is a much slower process.

+ Q4 | How long is the course?

It’s a 2 day course running on Saturday and Sunday from 10 – 5pm with an hour’s lunch break.

Expert tuition by one of the UK’s most well respected glass artists in her own spacious and well equipped studio. All materials and tools are provided and you’ll take home the glass pieces you arrived with.

Not forgetting... Tea, coffee, a delicious homemade lunch and homemade cake.

Once you’ve booked a place you’ll be sent information on how to prepare for the course and what you’ll need to bring.

+ Q8 | Anything else?

This class will get noisy due to the use of machinery. Ear defenders will be provided.
